![]() ![]() I was able to get a glimpse of him and hear him talk. In a small bookshop where some 100 people can stand, around a thousand came. Since he was the only novelist who ever cared to actually meet his Indian fans, we were thrilled. He discovered that India has a very large English novels reading population about a decade ago and took every opportunity to visit big cities and talked to his fans to promote his books. I was able to see someone I admired a lot once. I have never been able to meet anyone I admired.īut 2 different type of interactions I would like to share. Wow! Really happy to know you got to meet someone you admired :) Just before I left he took out a piece of paper and did this for me: He had dinner, went up to bed, and just slipped away. He welcomed me into his brownstone, ushered me upstairs to his studio (where he made the magic), and I spent the afternoon watching him work and discussing drawing (how to draw hands, how to draw hair, shadowing, etc.) To my astonishment, he said “Sure, come on over.” He had to give me directions, which subway to take, where to get off, etc.Īn hour later I was knocking on his door. I told him I was an amateur cartoonist and would love to meet him. I introduced myself and asked if he was the Al Hirschfeld who did the caricatures. On a whim, I looked in the phone book one afternoon and found an Albert Hirschfeld. (He’s the one who wrote his daughter’s name, Nina, into every drawing.) My idol was Al Hirschfeld, who did caricatures for the NY Times for like 70 years. As some of you know, I also dabble in cartooning. Celebrities had unlisted numbers but not all. And there was no robo-calling in the pre-Google era. You could have an unlisted number, but most people didn’t bother. Alcohol, drugs and domestic violence are all symptoms, not the cause.I think they still exist to a certain degree, but there was a time (pre-Google) where to find someone’s phone number you had to go to this real thick book that weighed a ton and look them up.Healing will take place through the application of cultural and spiritual knowledge.Interconnectedness – it takes everyone to heal a community.The solution resides within each community.Within each person, family and community is the innate knowledge for well being.Change comes from within the individual, the family and the community.Alcohol and drugs are destroying us we want to recover.When the community leads, the leaders will follow.That our traditional ways were knowledgeable about the natural order.There is a natural order running the universe.Elders and teachings are a guiding force to direct ourselves, families and communities.All Native people believe in a Supreme Being.Changes are the result of implementing Natural laws.Leadership existence ensures Truth is given to the people.Leadership exists to serve the people first.A set of Principles, Laws & Values governs Mother Earth.Some communities have made the commitment to become one of the 100 Drum Communities. This is accomplished through the community development process offered by White Bison. Many communities have decided to begin a process of learning and planning that includes the building a vision of wellness. When the Sacred Hoop comes to a community, the people gather for ceremonies and talks about living a sober and healthy life that is balanced emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Since 1999, there have been a number of Sacred Hoop Journeys. On occasion, the Sacred Hoop will be taken on a tour. ![]() Individual communities can request a visit by the Sacred Hoop by contacting the White Bison office. Since the Sacred Hoop was blessed, it has traveled over 75,000 miles to Indigenous communities across the United States. The Sacred Hoop took part in many different healing activities and ceremonies between 1995 and the first full-fledged Sacred Hoop Journey in the Spring of 1999. ![]() The Elders placed the four gifts of Healing, Hope, Unity and the Power to Forgive the Unforgivable into the Hoop, entrusting it to Don Coyhis, Mohican nation, and the White Bison organization for the work to come. On the first day of summer of that year, a multicultural Elders gathering was held in Janesville, Wisconsin to provide prayers for the Hoop and align its purpose to the coming Healing Time. Mission of the Sacred Hoop: Healing Individuals, Families, Communities and NationsĪ hoop just like in his vision was built in a sweat lodge over a weekend in May of 1995. ![]()
